In the past research has proven that men who suffer from the disease are at a higher risk for heart attack but little information was known about the effects of the disease on women. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a disease that effects millions of Americans today. Most people are not aware that they are suffering from high blood pressure. It is important to be aware of your blood pressure level because high blood pressure can result in stroke, heart attack and death if not treated properly.

Contrary to what most people think, high blood pressure does not just affect people who are tense, stressed or nervous. It can affect anyone and is not based on personality traits such as those listed above.

Every wondered what exactly blood pressure is? Well it is important to remember that your body needs oxygen to survive. The body carries oxygen through blood. When the heart beats it creates pressure that will push blood through various arteries and veins, also known as blood vessels and capillaries. Blood pressure is the result of two forces. The first force occurs as blood pumps out of the heart and into the arteries that are part of the circulatory system. The second force is created as the heart rests between heart beats.

Healthy arteries are made of muscle and a semi-flexible tissue that stretches when the heart pumps blood through them. The more forcefully that the blood pumps results in the arteries stretching more to allow blood to flow easily. Overtime if these tissues continue to stretch it will create problems such as:

  • Vascular Weakness
  • Vascular Scarring
  • Increased Risk of Blood Clots
  • Increased Plaque Build
  • Tissue and Organ Damage From Narrowed and Blocked Arteries

For a long time it has been known that stress can effect the heart and lead to a heart attack. It is one of many heart attack causes that we can work to prevent.  Stress is a normal part of life for everyone. Unfortunately, if it is left un-managed, stress can lead to other problems besides a heart attack including emotional, psychological and physical problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pains or irregular heart beats.

There are numerous different things that you can do to help manage stress. One of the main things that you can do is make sure that you are getting enough sleep. Most individuals don’t realize how important sleep is for your body. Adults should try to get in between seven and eight hours of sleep each night. Another factor that is beneficial at reducing stress is exercising.  When we exercise our body releases more endorphins, which are the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters. Exercising is also a great distraction to stress in our lives. When you are running around in the middle of a football game there is hardly anytime to think about something bothering you at work.

Heart attacks in middle aged women are on the rise according to recent reports.  Heart attacks have often been associated mainly with men but this is proving to be false more and more often. Heart attack causes can often be different for men and women. One of the main reasons that heart attacks in middle aged women are increasing is because obesity in this age group is also increasing. Some experts feel the two are linked together. This theory helps to prove the importance of living an overall healthy lifestyle. Eating right and exercising on a regular basis can help reduce the risk of not only heart attacks but other important health concerns.

Snacks like nuts such as almonds are great for your body. They contain antioxidants and omega-3s. Make sure to choose the right nuts though. Some are high in fats and that is not a snack you want to eat when trying to prevent heart attack signs.

Good Fats
Make sure the only fats in your diet are unsaturated fats. You should also only have about 25 to 35 % of your calories come from unsaturated fats. Fats such as olive oil, safflower oil, and canola oil are all beneficial, but in moderation of course.
